Amy Berger’s Key Findings – “The Alzheimer’s Antidote”

I first came across Amy Berger’s work recently and was delighted to see how closely it aligns with what I’ve been recommending. Her findings affirm that Alzheimer’s is primarily a metabolic disorder — one that can often be slowed or even improved through nutrition and lifestyle changes that restore the brain’s energy balance.

Alzheimer’s as “Type 3 Diabetes”

Despite adequate glucose in the bloodstream, the brain cells are unable to use it effectively, leading to cognitive decline

The brain in Alzheimer’s loses its ability to properly use glucose for energy.

This leads to energy starvation of neurons, even when blood glucose levels are high.

Insulin resistance in the brain is a central feature — hence the term Type 3 Diabetes.

Ketones as an Alternative Fuel

Ketones can bypass the damaged glucose pathways.

A ketogenic or low-carb diet provides ketones that feed the brain and improve cognitive function.

Reducing Carbohydrate Load

Lowering dietary carbohydrates helps restore metabolic flexibility and reduce insulin resistance systemically and in the brain.

This also lowers inflammation and oxidative stress — both of which drive Alzheimer’s pathology.

Healthy Fats and Nutrient Density

“These foods stabilize energy, hormones, and mood — all essential for cognitive resilience.”

Use natural fats: butter, coconut oil, eggs, meat, and fish.

Avoids industrial seed oils and processed foods.

Nutrient-rich animal foods support mitochondrial function and brain repair.

No Need for Extreme Carnivore

The approach is not zero-carb or purely meat-based.

It allows for non-starchy vegetables, some dairy, and individual carbohydrate tolerance.

Role of Lifestyle

Adequate sleep, sunlight, exercise, and stress management all enhance brain energy metabolism.

These lifestyle factors can slow or even reverse cognitive decline.

Supplemental Ketones

Exogenous ketones (like ketone esters or MCT oil) may temporarily help those unable to follow a strict keto diet, especially in early cognitive decline.

Evidence-Based but Practical

Emphasize food-first, sustainable changes rather than short-term diets or reliance on supplements.
